The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of his move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
