Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry
The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.
"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
Injury History
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
